Pittsburgh, PA – Drivers in parts of northwestern Pennsylvania are being urged to use caution early Tuesday as freezing rain and light snow create hazardous travel conditions during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 10 a.m. Tuesday for Jefferson and Forest counties, including areas near Punxsutawney, Brookville, and Clarion. The advisory warns of a mix of light freezing rain and snow, which could quickly lead to slick roads.
Forecasters say snow accumulations up to 1 inch are possible, along with a light glaze of ice. While amounts are expected to remain modest, even small ice accumulations can significantly impact travel, especially on untreated roads, bridges, overpasses, and rural highways.
The hazardous conditions are expected to impact the Tuesday morning commute, with the greatest risk occurring before temperatures rise later in the morning. Road conditions may vary widely over short distances, making travel unpredictable.
Officials recommend motorists slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking, particularly in shaded areas and higher elevations where freezing rain may linger longer. If travel is not essential, delaying trips until later this morning could reduce risk.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve by late morning as precipitation tapers off and temperatures rise above freezing.
Drivers can check the latest road conditions by calling 511 or monitoring local transportation and weather updates.
