Pittsburgh, Pa. – Morning commuters across Pennsylvania are navigating dangerous driving conditions Friday as dense fog grips much of the state, reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less in several regions.
According to the National Weather Service, dense fog advisories remain in effect through 9 a.m. in western counties including Venango, Butler, Clarion, Lawrence, Jefferson, Armstrong, and Indiana. Central Pennsylvania, including Harrisburg, Lancaster, York, and Hershey, is under the same advisory until 10 a.m. Farther north, reduced visibility is impacting drivers from Warren and McKean to Johnstown, Tioga, and Northern Lycoming counties, also until 10 a.m.
The thick fog is making travel treacherous on major roadways, including Interstate 79 near Butler, Interstate 80 from Clarion through DuBois, and stretches of the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Carlisle and Lancaster. Motorists are urged to slow down, switch on low-beam headlights, and leave extra space between vehicles.
School districts in affected areas warned buses may experience delays during pickup hours. Emergency officials advise residents to allow extra time for morning travel and to avoid unnecessary trips until the fog lifts by late morning.
Advisories are expected to expire by 10 a.m., with improving visibility into midday. Another round of patchy morning fog could return this weekend as temperatures remain mild and overnight air stays damp.
