PITTSBURGH – A strong fall storm system will move into western Pennsylvania Sunday afternoon, bringing rain, isolated thunderstorms, and widespread gusty winds that could exceed 40 mph. The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh warns that the strongest gusts will occur late Sunday through early Monday as a cold front pushes through the region.

According to the NWS Pittsburgh office, sustained winds of 20–30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are likely for much of southwestern Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh, Washington, and Indiana. Wind probabilities rise sharply after noon Sunday, peaking during the evening and overnight hours.

Even outside of thunderstorms, strong gradient winds may bring down small branches and unsecured outdoor items. Scattered power outages are possible, particularly across higher elevations east of I-79 and along exposed ridges. Motorists on I-70, I-76, and I-79 should anticipate crosswinds, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Rain showers will accompany the system, with a few isolated thunderstorms developing late Sunday afternoon. Forecasters urge residents to secure loose decorations, patio furniture, and garbage bins before winds increase. Cooler and calmer air will settle in by Monday afternoon.
