Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Light snow is expected to develop Wednesday afternoon and continue overnight, with 1 to 4 inches possible across ridge areas near major roadways including I-79, I-70 and I-68.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, snowfall will begin later Wednesday and persist into Thursday, especially across the higher elevations of western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. Accumulations are forecast to range from 1 to 3 inches in most ridge locations, with up to 4 inches possible along west-facing slopes.
Areas outside the ridges, including much of the Pittsburgh metro along I-376 and portions of I-79, may see only a dusting to minor accumulations. Forecasters noted that snow showers in ridge communities could occasionally become moderate in intensity, allowing snow to accumulate on untreated road surfaces.
Roadways through elevated terrain, including stretches of I-68 in West Virginia and I-70 near the Pennsylvania border, may experience reduced visibility and slick conditions overnight Wednesday into early Thursday.
While widespread significant impacts are not expected, drivers traveling through higher elevations should allow extra time and remain alert for changing road conditions. Temperatures hovering near freezing may allow snow to stick more efficiently in ridge communities compared to lower valleys.
The snowfall event is projected to taper off later Thursday as conditions gradually improve.
Students, early-morning commuters and commercial drivers using elevated interstates should monitor updated forecasts and roadway reports before traveling.
