Pittsburgh, PA – The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a special weather statement for much of western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and eastern Ohio Thursday evening, warning of icy roads and dangerous travel conditions following a light coating of snow.
According to the National Weather Service, a brief period of snow has fallen on previously warm road surfaces, which have since cooled rapidly below freezing. As a result, untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces may develop black ice overnight. Slick conditions are expected across areas including Pittsburgh, Washington, Greensburg, Morgantown, Steubenville, and Wheeling.
Motorists traveling after Thanksgiving dinner are urged to exercise caution, particularly on rural roads and shaded areas where ice can be difficult to see. Even a thin layer of ice can make roads treacherous, leading to potential spinouts or crashes.
Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through early Friday morning, meaning icy conditions could persist into the morning commute. Travelers should allow extra time and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.
