Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Drivers across western Pennsylvania are starting New Year’s Day with lingering light snow and slick roads, especially in northern counties and higher elevations, before conditions gradually improve later today.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, light snow will taper through the morning hours, with flakes lingering longest along the Interstate 80 corridor and across the ridges. While snowfall amounts remain minimal, untreated roads are likely hazardous early, particularly on secondary routes, bridges, and overpasses.
Additional light snow is possible again this evening into early Friday as a weak wave moves through the region. Any new accumulation is expected to be minor, but forecasters note the best chance for measurable snow remains north of Pittsburgh, including parts of Clarion, Jefferson, Forest, and Venango counties. The ridges of Fayette and Westmoreland counties may also see brief snow showers.
Across the Pittsburgh metro, snow coverage remains spotty, with most areas seeing little more than nuisance snowfall. Still, even a light coating can create slick conditions during the morning commute and again late tonight. PennDOT crews continue monitoring roadways, but motorists are urged to slow down and allow extra travel time where snow persists.
Temperatures stay seasonably cold, helping snow linger on shaded surfaces through the day. Visibility may briefly drop during passing snow showers, especially in elevated terrain. Residents heading out early should use caution and check local road conditions before traveling.
Looking ahead, snow chances diminish after tonight, with quieter weather expected to settle in for the remainder of the weekend. No significant accumulation is anticipated beyond today’s activity, though patchy slick spots could linger into Friday morning.
The National Weather Service says additional updates will be issued if snow coverage increases, but for now, the primary concern remains short-lived travel impacts from light snow on New Year’s Day.
