Pittsburgh, PA – Drivers across western Pennsylvania could face sudden road hazards by mid-afternoon Sunday as severe storms capable of 75 mph wind gusts and golf ball-sized hail begin developing after 3 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center and NWS Pittsburgh, an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) covers much of western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern West Virginia through 11 p.m. Sunday. Forecasters cite growing confidence in widespread damaging winds, hail exceeding 2 inches, and a low but real chance of isolated tornadoes.

The highest impact zone includes Pittsburgh, Butler, Indiana, and Latrobe, with storms expected to intensify as they track along the I-79 and I-76 corridors. In eastern Ohio, cities like Cambridge, Zanesville, and areas near Columbus could see storms arrive earlier in the evening, bringing rapid visibility drops and debris on roadways. Farther south, Wheeling and Morgantown sit in the same enhanced zone, where power outages could affect thousands if wind reports verify.

Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid non-essential travel during peak storm hours. Large hail can shatter windshields, while sudden wind bursts may down trees onto secondary roads and interstates including I-70 and I-376.

Storm activity is expected to weaken closer to midnight, but additional watches or warnings may be issued with little lead time through Sunday night.
