The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a special weather statement warning of potential freezing rain tonight across higher elevations in parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia.

According to the NWS Pittsburgh office, patchy freezing rain is most likely in the higher elevations of Eastern Tucker and Preston counties in West Virginia. The risk increases as temperatures dip below freezing, potentially creating icy conditions on untreated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses. Drivers are urged to slow down and maintain safe distances between vehicles.

Similarly, the NWS Baltimore/Washington office highlights the chance of freezing drizzle tonight in areas including Garrett and Extreme Western Allegany counties in Maryland, as well as Western Highland, Grant, Mineral, and Pendleton counties in Virginia and West Virginia. West-facing ridgetops are particularly susceptible. The agency noted that a Winter Weather Advisory might be issued later if ice accumulation becomes more likely.

Residents are advised to monitor forecasts and take precautions during overnight travel.
