CINCINNATI, OH – Increasing rainfall across the Ohio River basin is raising concerns for flooding north of the river, with totals exceeding 1.5 inches in some areas and higher localized amounts possible through Thursday.

According to the US National Weather Service Ohio River Forecast Center, persistent rainfall is expected to continue across portions of Indiana, Ohio, and surrounding states, adding significant water into already responsive river systems. This pattern is increasing the likelihood of minor flooding, with some areas potentially reaching moderate flood levels.

Communities north of the Ohio River—including Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and areas across central and northern Indiana—are expected to see the greatest impacts. Major travel routes such as I-71, I-75, I-70, and I-64 could experience water-covered roadways, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

According to the National Weather Service, the northwest portion of the basin is most likely to receive rainfall totals above 1.5 inches, though localized heavier pockets may develop. This additional runoff may lead to rising creeks, streams, and rivers over a short period.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions, particularly overnight and during early morning commutes. Even shallow water can create hazardous driving conditions or stall vehicles.

Residents in flood-prone areas should monitor water levels closely and be prepared for possible advisories or warnings if conditions worsen.

This situation may especially impact commuters and workers traveling along river-adjacent highways and low-lying routes.
