Pittsburgh, PA – After weeks of dry conditions, Pittsburgh is seeing a sharp turnaround in rainfall totals this week. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Pittsburgh office, the city recorded 1.63 inches of rain on Monday, September 22, and more precipitation is expected through Friday.

Forecasters say another 1.25 to 1.75 inches of rain could fall by September 26, which would mark a significant shift in the city’s climate rankings for the month. As of Sunday, September 21, Pittsburgh had only received 0.39 inches of rain, making it the 13th driest September on record out of 155 years. With this week’s rainfall, the month is now on pace to become the 15th wettest.

The surge in precipitation also impacts temperature and climate averages. The city’s average high temperature for September has been 2.7 degrees above normal, while rainfall totals are swinging well above typical levels.

NWS officials noted that this sudden reversal underscores the region’s variable weather patterns. “After a lull in precipitation this September, we’re making up for it this week,” the office reported.

Residents across Allegheny County and the Pittsburgh metro area should prepare for periods of steady rain through midweek. Drivers are urged to use caution on slick roads and allow extra travel time during heavier showers.
