Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Wet roads could turn icy along I-70 and I-80 by 10 p.m. Saturday as rain transitions to snow and patchy freezing rain across western Pennsylvania overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a round of rain and snow will move into the region tonight after a mainly dry and mild afternoon. Temperatures climbed into the 50s across much of Allegheny County earlier Saturday, but colder air filtering in after sunset will allow surface readings to slip toward the freezing mark.
The greatest concern for patchy freezing rain lies between I-70 and I-80, including communities such as Washington, Butler and New Castle. Even a light glaze can create hazardous travel, especially on bridges, overpasses and untreated secondary roads. Motorists along I-79 and U.S. 422 should be alert for rapidly changing conditions late Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
Farther south toward Morgantown and north into Clarion and Jefferson counties, precipitation may fall primarily as a rain and snow mix before transitioning to light snow toward daybreak. Accumulations are expected to remain light, but slick spots could develop before sunrise Sunday.
Drivers planning late-night travel should slow down, increase following distance and check PennDOT road updates before heading out. Conditions are expected to improve gradually Sunday as precipitation tapers, but additional advisories may be issued if freezing rain coverage expands overnight.
