Pennsylvania/Ohio – A sharp overnight chill is setting up across the Pittsburgh region, and temperatures will drop fast enough to threaten plants and outdoor vegetation before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Freeze Watch is in effect from 1 a.m. through 10 a.m. Tuesday for parts of eastern Ohio, where temperatures are expected to fall below 32°F. Some areas could dip into the upper 20s by daybreak, especially in valleys and rural spots.
Across Pittsburgh, Weirton, Steubenville, and surrounding communities, the cold will settle in quickly after midnight. While not all locations are under the official watch, near-freezing temperatures are still likely across much of western Pennsylvania. Sensitive plants, early gardens, and flowering trees face the greatest risk.
Take action now. Cover or bring in outdoor plants, and consider insulating exposed pipes in colder-prone areas. Pet owners should also ensure animals are sheltered from the cold overnight.
Road impacts remain minimal since conditions stay dry, but colder surfaces may feel noticeably brisk during the early commute. Temperatures rebound later Tuesday, climbing back into the 40s and 50s with improving conditions.
A warming trend builds midweek, with highs reaching into the 50s Wednesday and even warmer by Thursday. However, this brief freeze highlights the volatility of early spring weather across the Ohio Valley.
Protect what you can tonight. Are temperatures already dropping quickly where you are?
