PITTSBURGH – A couple was stabbed Sunday night in Bigelow Square after allegedly being approached by a man demanding money, police said.

According to the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department, officers from Zone 2 responded just before 8 p.m. to Chatham Street for reports of a stabbing. Authorities said an adult male and female reported that they were in a nearby park when a man confronted them, allegedly demanding cash. When the couple refused, the suspect reportedly stabbed them.

Police said the male victim sustained stab wounds to his chin and leg, while the female victim suffered a superficial wound to her arm. Both were transported to an area hospital by Pittsburgh EMS and were listed in stable condition.

The suspect was detained at the scene. He also allegedly sustained a wound to his leg during the incident and was taken to the hospital by EMS in stable condition.

Authorities said charges are forthcoming as the investigation continues. The names of those involved have not been released.

Bigelow Square, located near the University of Pittsburgh campus and other busy areas of the city, draws both commuters and residents.

Police have not released further information on whether the suspect knew the victims or if the attack was random. More details will emerge as police continue their investigation.
