Pittsburgh, PA – Residents across western Pennsylvania and parts of northern West Virginia should prepare for sub-freezing temperatures early Friday as a Freeze Warning goes into effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m., according to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.
Forecasters expect overnight lows near 30 degrees, marking the coldest temperatures of the season so far for areas including Butler, Venango, Armstrong, Clarion, Indiana, Jefferson, and Westmoreland Counties in Pennsylvania, as well as Preston and Tucker Counties in West Virginia.
The weather service warns that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and sensitive outdoor vegetation, and unprotected outdoor plumbing may also be at risk. Homeowners are advised to drain hoses, cover outdoor spigots, and bring plants indoors before midnight.
Clear skies and calm conditions will promote rapid cooling overnight. Rural and higher-elevation areas such as Canaan Valley and the Laurel Highlands are likely to see the most significant freezing temperatures.
Friday’s afternoon highs are expected to recover into the low 50s, but another cold night is possible before a gradual warm-up over the weekend.
This marks the first widespread Freeze Warning of the fall season for much of the Pittsburgh forecast area.
