Pittsburgh, PA – A widespread area of dense and freezing fog is impacting the region this morning until 9 AM, creating hazardous travel conditions for the Thursday commute. The National Weather Service Pittsburgh office reports that visibility may fall to as low as one-quarter mile in many locations, with the greatest risks north and east of Pittsburgh.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing fog could lead to a light glaze of ice on untreated roadways, particularly on bridges and overpasses where cold surfaces allow ice to form more readily. Motorists traveling through Butler, Clarion, Armstrong, Westmoreland, and Indiana counties may encounter slick patches as temperatures hover near freezing.
NWS notes that fog coverage is extensive across southwestern Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and eastern Ohio, with Dense Fog and Freezing Fog Advisories active until 9 AM Thursday. The combination of restricted visibility and icy spots makes for potentially dangerous travel, and drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time for the morning commute.
Weather maps released early this morning highlight both advisory zones, showing freezing fog concentrated primarily northeast of Pittsburgh and dense fog extending through the Ohio River Valley, including Washington, Wheeling, and parts of eastern Ohio.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve by mid-morning as temperatures rise and the fog begins to lift. However, isolated slick spots may linger even after visibility improves.
