Pittsburgh, PA – The National Weather Service (NWS) Pittsburgh reports a mix of rain, snow, and sleet moving through western Pennsylvania early Wednesday, with temperatures ranging from 34°F to 37°F, creating variable and potentially slick travel conditions during the morning commute.
According to the latest observations, rain is falling in areas south and west of Pittsburgh, where surface temperatures are slightly above freezing. Mixed precipitation—including sleet and wet snow—is occurring across portions of northern Allegheny, Butler, and Beaver Counties, while steady snow is reported further north in Mercer and Venango Counties, where readings have dipped below 34°F.
Forecasters say the precipitation type is closely tied to local temperature fluctuations. “Just a couple degrees makes the difference between rain and snow,” the NWS said in a morning update. “Motorists should be alert for quickly changing road conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses.”
By midmorning, temperatures are expected to edge a few degrees warmer, allowing rain to become the dominant precipitation type across most of the region. However, elevated and rural areas north of I-80 may continue to see light snow through late morning before tapering off.
Travelers should reduce speed, maintain extra following distance, and allow extra time for their morning drive. Even light snow accumulation or brief freezing drizzle can create slick spots on untreated surfaces.
Conditions are expected to improve by afternoon, with cloudy but dry weather persisting into Thursday.
