PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Western Pennsylvania woke up to a frosty Friday morning as temperatures dipped into the mid-30s, signaling the region’s first true taste of fall. A Frost Advisory issued by the National Weather Service remained in effect until 9 a.m., with some outlying areas dropping near freezing before sunrise. Sensitive plants and outdoor vegetation faced damage if left unprotected.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a rapid warmup follows this morning’s chill, with highs reaching the mid-60s under bright sunshine. The weekend turns noticeably milder, but a strong cold front Sunday will bring gusty winds and periods of rain across the region. Showers may begin late Saturday night and continue through Sunday evening, affecting travel on I-79, I-376, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Wind gusts up to 25 mph could accompany heavier downpours.

Saturday will be the best day for outdoor plans, with highs in the upper 70s and only increasing clouds late. By Sunday, rain chances rise to near 90 percent, with possible rumbles of thunder during the afternoon. Cooler air returns Monday, but sunshine will rebuild for the start of next week.

Residents are urged to cover or bring in tender plants, check outdoor decorations, and secure lightweight furniture ahead of the breezy Sunday front. The frost marks a turning point for western Pennsylvania, ushering in true fall weather with crisp mornings, colorful foliage, and cooler evenings ahead.
