Pittsburgh, PA – The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a Special Weather Statement warning of hazardous overnight travel conditions across parts of western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, including Westmoreland, Fayette, Indiana, Marion, Monongalia, and Preston counties.
According to meteorologist Frazier with the Weather Service, temperatures will drop below freezing late Friday night, allowing any remaining moisture from earlier snowmelt to refreeze and create black ice on area roads.
Forecasters also note that patchy freezing fog and freezing drizzle may develop overnight, especially along the Laurel Highlands and higher elevations of northern West Virginia, including the Canaan Valley and Kingwood areas. These conditions could result in light icing on bridges, overpasses, and other exposed surfaces.
Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution through early Saturday morning, particularly in rural and mountain areas where road treatment may be limited. Conditions should improve by late morning as fog lifts and temperatures rise above freezing.
