Colorado Springs, Colo. – Residents across El Paso County face the potential for damaging thunderstorms Friday evening as strong storms move across the Pikes Peak region. Winds topping 70 mph, hail up to an inch in diameter, and localized flash flooding are the main threats.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the greatest risk for severe weather runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with storm cells developing near Colorado Springs and tracking east across the county. Areas including Monument, Falcon, and Fountain may experience quick bursts of heavy rain capable of flooding low-lying roads and underpasses.
High winds could down tree limbs and power lines, raising the risk of scattered outages. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded intersections and seek shelter immediately if storms approach. Emergency officials advise against traveling through water of unknown depth.
The storm threat is expected to taper after sunset, though lingering showers are possible overnight. Additional alerts could be issued if storms redevelop later in the weekend.
