Pike County, IL – Two Champaign residents were arrested this week following a crash on Interstate 72 that led deputies to uncover drugs, paraphernalia, and weapons, authorities said.

According to the Pike County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash near mile marker 18 on I-72 eastbound at 10:36 p.m. Friday. Witnesses told deputies that a man and woman were seen at the scene but declined help before leaving. A tow inventory of the vehicle revealed crack cocaine, heroin, additional controlled substances, hypodermic syringes, digital scales, and other paraphernalia.

On Saturday, a citizen reported that two individuals had come to their home and admitted they had been left near the roadway. With help from Pike County Crimestoppers and residents, deputies located and arrested the suspects on Sunday.

Deputies arrested Matthew G. Lawrence, 40, of Champaign, and recovered a loaded handgun. Lawrence faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and was wanted on warrants out of Douglas and Peoria counties.

Jessica K. Pope, 28, of Champaign, was also arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both suspects remain in custody at the Pike County Jail, where deputies reported additional drugs and paraphernalia were recovered during the arrests.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Department credited Pike County Crimestoppers and community members for their assistance in the investigation. Authorities reminded the public that anonymous tips leading to arrests may be eligible for cash rewards through Crime Stoppers at 217-285-1500.
