Pierce County, WA – A late-night pursuit in Pierce County ended dramatically when a dog was ejected from a vehicle’s windshield after a crash, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the incident began around 12:45 a.m. on January 6 when deputies on Key Peninsula attempted a traffic stop for expired registration. What started as a routine stop escalated quickly when the vehicle allegedly sped away to evade deputies.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the pursuit lasted less than 30 seconds before the driver lost control, crashing into an embankment at a T-intersection. Deputies reported that a large dog was thrown from the windshield during the crash and fled. A smaller dog was found near the driver’s seat. Both animals were later confirmed safe.

Deputies arrested a 39-year-old male driver and 28-year-old female passenger. Investigators said drugs and drug paraphernalia were found inside the car. The driver faces multiple charges, including eluding, DUI, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and animal cruelty in the second degree.

The female passenger, identified as the owner of both dogs, was released at the scene to retrieve the animals.

Officials described the case as another example of how substance use behind the wheel can endanger both people and pets. “Nice work by both of these deputies and getting this driver off the road,” the agency said in a statement.
