Pierce County, WA – A 33-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday morning after deputies say he fled a welfare check, drove under the influence, and later caused property damage during a brief pursuit in the Canyon Road East area.

According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, to the 15600 block of Canyon Road East after reports of a man stumbling along a sidewalk. When deputies arrived, they learned the man’s vehicle was in the process of being towed. As a deputy approached, the suspect allegedly jumped into the vehicle and sped away.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop near 144th Street East, where the vehicle briefly stopped before taking off again, prompting a short pursuit. During the chase, the suspect allegedly drove onto a residential dead-end road and cut through a yard, damaging a fence while making a U-turn. Due to heavy morning traffic and safety concerns, deputies terminated the pursuit.

Authorities later identified the suspect and located his vehicle parked at a nearby home. Deputies attempted to make contact, leading to a 45-minute standoff. According to officials, the man repeatedly came to the door before retreating inside. He eventually exited the home and was taken into custody without further incident.

Investigators reported an open container of Coors Light inside the vehicle. The suspect was booked on charges including DUI, felony eluding, obstructing, resisting arrest, and second-degree malicious mischief.

Deputies also contacted the homeowner to document the fence damage and provided a case number for follow-up.
