Pierce County, Washington – A traffic stop escalated into a pursuit Wednesday after a driver fled a tow truck, prompting a PIT maneuver and arrest, authorities said.

According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, a traffic deputy spotted a Ford F-150 pickup around 10:30 a.m. Feb. 4 near 721nd Street East and Canyon Road that had just fled Tacoma police after being hooked to a tow truck. Deputies said the suspect snapped the tow chain while escaping, dragging a long section of chain behind the vehicle as it traveled through Pierce County.

A traffic deputy attempted to stop the truck, but the driver allegedly continued to flee, creating a risk to other motorists. Authorities said the deputy then initiated a PIT maneuver — a controlled intervention technique used to stop fleeing vehicles — which initially brought the truck to a stop.

Investigators said the suspect drove off again moments later, heading down a dead-end road. With no exit, the driver abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Deputies arrested the suspect after a short foot pursuit.

The suspect was identified as a 44-year-old man. Authorities said he has felony warrants out of California for multiple motor vehicle thefts.

In addition to those warrants, deputies said the suspect now faces additional charges in Washington, including reckless driving, eluding law enforcement, resisting arrest, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, driving without a valid driver’s license, and felony malicious mischief related to significant damage caused to the tow truck.

No injuries were reported.

The incident caused temporary traffic disruptions in the area and may be of interest to commuters who regularly travel Canyon Road during mid-morning hours.

The investigation remains ongoing.
