Orient, OH – Emergency crews responded late Wednesday morning after a deadly collision on US Route 62 left one driver dead and caused major traffic disruption across Pickaway County.
According to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 10:41 a.m. Wednesday near the 9900 block of US Route 62, just outside Orient. Deputies say a caller reported a head-on collision involving a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle.
When deputies arrived, they found a 2023 white Kenworth semi-truck driven by Travis C. Kemper traveling westbound, and a 2023 red Dodge Ram, driven by 70-year-old David E. Shannon, which had been traveling eastbound before the collision.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Shannon allegedly attempted to pass another vehicle when the Dodge Ram collided head-on with the westbound semi-truck. The force of the crash ripped off the semi-truck’s left front tire, causing the truck to veer left and sideswipe a 2012 green Subaru, driven by Rachel A. Webb, traveling eastbound.
Deputies say the Subaru then spun out of control and struck a utility pole.
Shannon, the driver of the Dodge Ram, was pronounced dead at the scene by Sterling Joint Ambulance District Medics. No additional injuries were reported.
Sheriff Matthew Hafey thanked the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Tri County Fire Department, Sterling Joint Ambulance District, Pickaway County Coroner’s Office, and Ohio Department of Transportation for assisting at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed the crash remains under active investigation.
