Phoenix, AZ – A Flood Watch remains in effect for portions of Maricopa County as another round of showers and isolated thunderstorms moves through central Arizona tonight and continues into Thursday. Northern Maricopa County faces the highest rainfall totals, with saturated soils from recent storms increasing the risk of runoff and flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, rainfall amounts in northern Maricopa County may reach 1.00 to 1.50 inches, with locally higher totals possible in stronger thunderstorms. The south-central Arizona lower deserts, including the Phoenix metro, are expected to see 0.25 to 1.00 inch, also with higher amounts in storms. The Flood Watch expires at 5 p.m. Wednesday for northwest Maricopa County and 6 a.m. Thursday for northeast Maricopa County.

A slow-moving low pressure system will linger over the Southwest through Thursday, producing several rounds of showers and isolated storms. Rain chances remain highest from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, especially over central and western Arizona’s high terrain. Forecasters also warn of minor flooding on area roadways, flowing washes, and travel impacts at low water crossings.

Gusty winds and occasional lightning are possible with the stronger cells. Drivers are urged never to drive through flooded roads or washes, as even a small amount of moving water can sweep a vehicle away. Recreation near creeks, streams, and washes is discouraged due to rapidly changing conditions.

Another system is expected to arrive Friday into Sunday, bringing additional rainfall potential.
