PHOENIX, Ariz. – Drivers across Arizona could face hazardous conditions Friday as strong winds sweep the region, with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph in parts of Southeast California and western Arizona. The National Weather Service warns the afternoon and evening will bring widespread gusts of 20 to 30 mph, with the potential for stronger bursts near the mountains.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, the strongest winds are expected along the Colorado River Valley and into Imperial County, California. Blowing dust may lower visibility on Interstates 8 and 10, while high-profile vehicles traveling north-south face the greatest risk of swaying or tipping. Temporary structures such as canopies or construction equipment should be secured ahead of the storm system.
Communities from Yuma to Phoenix should prepare for localized dust channels, which can reduce visibility in seconds. Loose outdoor items, including patio furniture and decorations, may become airborne under stronger gusts.
Wind advisories are in effect through Friday night, with conditions expected to improve by early Saturday morning. Additional advisories could be issued if wind speeds trend higher.
