Phoenix, Arizona – Drivers across southern Arizona could face sudden drops in visibility and slick roads within hours as isolated storms begin developing this afternoon and push north toward the Valley by evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to form south of Interstate 8 and drift northeast through the evening hours. While most storm activity is likely to stay south of central Phoenix, strong outflow winds may extend well beyond the rain cores, creating localized blowing dust and hazardous travel conditions.
Communities across Pinal County and southern Maricopa County, including Casa Grande, Maricopa, and areas along Interstate 10, face a 30 to 50 percent chance of measurable rain. Gusts could exceed 35 mph, especially near storm outflows, with brief heavy downpours possible under stronger cells. In the broader Phoenix metro, rain chances drop to around 10 percent, but wind-driven dust remains a concern along open desert roadways and construction zones.
Motorists should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, particularly during the evening commute. Reduce speed in low visibility, avoid dust plumes, and keep headlights on during rain. Loose outdoor items should be secured ahead of gusty winds.
Storm chances taper later tonight, but additional updates or advisories could be issued if stronger cells develop.
