Phoenix, Arizona — Breezy to locally windy conditions are expected to develop across portions of central and south-central Arizona beginning Wednesday morning, with stronger gusts likely to impact travel and outdoor activities through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, winds will increase early Wednesday and become more noticeable Thursday as a weather system moves through the region. Forecast guidance indicates sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph, particularly across open desert areas and along major travel corridors including Interstate 10, U.S. Route 60, Loop 101, and State Route 202.
The strongest winds are expected during the afternoon and early evening hours both days. These conditions may lead to difficult driving, especially for high-profile vehicles traveling west and east of the Phoenix metro area. Localized areas of blowing dust or sand are possible, which could briefly reduce visibility, mainly in typically dust-prone locations.
The National Weather Service advises residents to secure loose outdoor items, including patio furniture, trash bins, and temporary structures. Those with tents, construction materials, or lightweight equipment should ensure they are properly anchored ahead of the stronger gusts.
While widespread damage is not anticipated, the combination of gusty winds and dry ground conditions may increase travel hazards for commuters, delivery drivers, and students traveling during peak afternoon hours along I-10 through Phoenix and Buckeye and US-60 through Mesa and Apache Junction.
Winds are expected to gradually diminish late Thursday night into Friday as the system exits the region.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring updates from weather.gov/psr and to use caution when traveling during periods of reduced visibility or strong crosswinds.
