GLASGOW, Mont. — Strong west winds spreading across northeast Montana today are prompting a High Wind Warning for Phillips and Petroleum counties, with gusts potentially reaching 75 mph.

According to the National Weather Service office in Glasgow, sustained west winds of 30 to 45 mph are expected through the afternoon, with gusts between 60 and 75 mph possible across the region.

The strongest gusts are most likely in higher terrain areas near the Little Rockies, where wind speeds could peak during the early afternoon before gradually weakening later in the day.

Across eastern portions of the warning area, forecasters say west winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts between 45 and 55 mph are likely. Even outside the strongest wind corridor, gusty conditions may still create travel concerns.

Meteorologists also noted that strong crosswinds may impact north–south highways, which could affect high-profile vehicles and drivers traveling through exposed areas of the region.

The winds are expected to gradually diminish late this afternoon and evening, but conditions could still remain breezy until the warning expires at 9 p.m.

In addition to the wind threat, forecasters said relative humidity between 25% and 50% combined with gusty winds may briefly elevate fire weather concerns at times ahead of an approaching cold front.

That cold front is expected to arrive later this evening, bringing increasing chances for light rain or snow across parts of northeast Montana.

Officials are advising residents to secure loose outdoor objects and use caution while traveling, especially on exposed highways.

Gusty conditions may also affect students, commuters, and workers traveling across open rural roads during the afternoon.
