Philippines — A magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Mindanao early Friday, shaking parts of the Philippines and prompting a series of tsunami notices across the western Pacific before the threat was lifted.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu, the quake — centered about 20 kilometers east of Santiago, Davao Oriental — was followed by multiple aftershocks, including several between magnitude 5.0 and 5.9. The main tremor struck at 1:44 a.m. UTC, or midmorning local time, at a depth of roughly 58 kilometers.

Initial tsunami bulletins warned of potential waves up to 3 meters along parts of the Philippine coast, Indonesia, and Palau. Later evaluations showed only minor sea-level changes near Davao, with no destructive inundation. PHIVOLCS urged residents to remain alert and avoid coastal activities until conditions fully stabilize.

Transportation resumed by midday Friday, and no major damage or casualties were reported. Authorities are monitoring aftershocks along the Philippine Trench, one of the region’s most active subduction zones.
