Philadelphia, Pa. – Cooler air has settled over the region this week, but beachgoers face serious risks as dangerous rip currents continue to pound the New Jersey and Delaware coasts. The National Weather Service warns that surf conditions will remain hazardous through at least Thursday, making swimming unsafe at unguarded beaches.
According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, Tuesday brings partly to mostly cloudy skies with highs between 70 and 78 degrees. Showers are most likely southeast of Philadelphia, especially near the Jersey Shore. Winds will increase at the coast midweek, adding to the surf dangers.
On Wednesday, highs will hold in the 70s with partly sunny skies and a chance for a couple of passing showers. By Thursday, temperatures climb slightly into the low 80s, with coastal communities seeing the highest risk for rain and stronger winds. Officials stress that even strong swimmers should avoid the ocean during high rip current alerts.
Residents heading to the coast are urged to swim only at guarded beaches, follow lifeguard instructions, and stay out of rough surf. Hazards may persist into late week as onshore winds remain steady.
