Philadelphia, PA – A powerful cold front is expected to move through the Philadelphia region Thursday night into Friday, bringing widespread rain, strong winds, and the potential for downed trees and power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly, the storm system will arrive Thursday night, with rain becoming widespread and winds increasing overnight into Friday. Rainfall totals of 0.50 to 1 inch are expected across much of eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, with locally higher amounts — up to around 1.5 inches — possible in parts of the Poconos and northwest New Jersey.

Wind will be a primary concern as the system passes. Forecasters say wind gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour are likely from Thursday night through late Friday, particularly during and just after the frontal passage. These winds could bring down tree limbs and result in scattered power outages, especially in areas with saturated ground.

Temperatures will rise briefly Thursday night and early Friday as warm air surges ahead of the front. However, conditions will change quickly Friday afternoon and night as colder air rushes in behind the system, causing temperatures to drop sharply.

In addition to wind impacts, periods of heavy rain may lead to minor urban and roadway flooding, especially in poor-drainage areas and locations that experience heavier downpours. While widespread river flooding is not expected, localized issues could develop during the Friday morning commute.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects, including trash bins and holiday decorations, ahead of the wind. Drivers should be prepared for reduced visibility during heavy rain and use caution on bridges and elevated roadways where strong crosswinds may develop.

The National Weather Service advises monitoring updated forecasts as the timing and intensity of wind and rainfall may change as the system approaches.
