Philadelphia, PA – Heavy, slow-moving thunderstorms could bring dangerous flash flooding across the I-95 corridor from Wilmington to Trenton through late tonight. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for northern Delaware, much of central and southern New Jersey, and southeastern Pennsylvania, warning of rainfall rates topping three inches per hour in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a moisture-rich air mass is colliding with a frontal boundary, producing highly efficient storms capable of dumping up to six inches of rain in localized spots. Urban centers such as Philadelphia, Camden, and Wilmington face the highest risk due to poor drainage and widespread impervious surfaces. Smaller streams, low-lying neighborhoods, and road underpasses could flood quickly.
Motorists are urged to avoid driving through standing water and to plan alternate routes away from flood-prone roads, especially during the evening commute. Residents should secure outdoor items and keep devices charged in case of power outages.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until late tonight, with additional warnings possible if rainfall intensifies or training storms develop.
