Philadelphia, PA — As Labor Day weekend approaches, the National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly has issued a reminder for beachgoers about the dangers of rip currents. Rip currents are powerful channels of water that flow away from the shore, posing a significant risk even to strong swimmers. These currents are common at surf beaches and can quickly pull swimmers away from safety.

According to the National Weather Service, anyone caught in a rip current should remain calm. The current won’t pull you under, so it’s crucial to avoid swimming against it. Instead, swim parallel to the shore to escape the current, then head back to the beach. If you are unable to escape, float or tread water until help arrives.

With Friday expected to bring a 65% chance of rain and temperatures around 77 degrees, conditions could still be dangerous. Beachgoers are advised to stay vigilant and swim near lifeguards if possible. The weather over the weekend will improve, with temperatures climbing to 85 degrees by Saturday and Sunday. However, the risk of rip currents will likely persist throughout the holiday weekend.

Stay informed and prioritize safety to ensure a fun and secure Labor Day weekend by the water.
