Philadelphia, PA – A surge of Arctic air will send temperatures plummeting across Pennsylvania next weekend, delivering subzero wind chills and single-digit lows between Thursday, December 11, and Monday, December 15. The outbreak will impact much of the state, including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Scranton, marking the coldest stretch of the season so far.
According to the National Weather Service Mount Holly, the Arctic front will arrive late Thursday, pushing temperatures well below normal. Morning lows are forecast in the single digits and low teens, while wind chills could fall between –10°F and –20°F in parts of northern and western Pennsylvania.
While the pattern will be mostly dry, forecasters say light snow flurries or brief squalls may develop across western counties and higher elevations. The main concern, however, remains dangerously cold air and gusty northwest winds, which could make outdoor exposure hazardous.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, protect pets, and check heating systems ahead of the weekend cold. Officials advise drivers to carry emergency kits and avoid prolonged outdoor work or activity during early mornings and overnight hours when wind chills will be most severe.
The cold snap is expected to last through Monday, December 16, with gradual moderation expected midweek. Meteorologists caution that another Arctic push could follow later in December.
