Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Drivers across the region could face slick and icy roads before sunrise Friday, as a wintry mix develops overnight across portions of northwest New Jersey and the southern Poconos. Even a light glaze—0.1 to 0.2 inches of ice accumulation—may be enough to create hazardous conditions along I-95, I-76, the PA Turnpike, and US-202, especially on untreated surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, today remains cloudy and mild with highs in the upper 30s to mid-40s. Rain begins this evening and continues through Friday, with widespread totals of 0.3 to 0.5 inches. Locally higher amounts are possible, particularly in areas of persistent banding.

Overnight, colder pockets north and west of Philadelphia—primarily Carbon, Monroe, and Sussex Counties—will shift from rain to a wintry mix. Snow and sleet amounts near one inch could occur in higher elevations, but the main concern remains the potential for icy patches forming on bridges, overpasses, and shaded stretches of roadway. Any icing may linger into the early commute Friday morning until temperatures rise above freezing.

Fog will also reduce visibility at times, particularly near the Delaware River and along major corridors such as I-95 and I-295. Slower travel times are likely in the predawn hours.

Temperatures stay mild through Friday afternoon as steady rain slowly exits from west to east. Sunday’s storm potential remains highly uncertain, with forecast confidence too low to determine exact precipitation types or timing.

Commuters should monitor updates closely and allow extra time Friday morning, especially in northern New Jersey and the Poconos where icing poses the greatest risk.
