Philadelphia, PA – Hazardous travel conditions are impacting the region early Saturday as snow, sleet, freezing rain, and freezing drizzle create slippery roads.
According to the National Weather Service office in Philadelphia/Mount Holly, road conditions across much of the region became dangerous overnight as winter precipitation accumulated and surface temperatures remained near or below freezing. Officials urged residents to stay off the roads if travel is not necessary.
The weather service reported that a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and freezing drizzle has resulted in icy roadways, including highways, secondary roads, bridges, and overpasses. Even roads that appear wet may be icy, especially in untreated areas and shaded locations.
For those who must travel early Saturday, forecasters advise motorists to slow down significantly, allow extra time to reach destinations, and maintain increased following distance between vehicles. Drivers are also urged not to use cruise control on slick roads and to give snowplows plenty of space to operate safely.
Winter driving safety data shows that each year in the United States, more than 1,000 fatalities and 100,000 injuries are linked to vehicle crashes during winter weather conditions. Officials stress that reducing speed and increasing awareness can significantly lower crash risk during icy conditions.
Drivers are also reminded to fully clear snow and ice from vehicles before traveling, as blowing snow from cars can reduce visibility and contribute to accidents.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Saturday as temperatures rise and precipitation tapers, but lingering slick spots may persist through the morning hours.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and local road condition reports before heading out and to delay travel whenever possible until conditions improve.
