Pennsylvania – Streetlights glow against low clouds as the air turns sharper. Pavement feels cold underfoot, and a developing winter system is now drawing attention across the Philadelphia region.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Philadelphia and much of eastern Pennsylvania, in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning. Forecasters warn of 4 to 6 inches of snow, mixed at times with sleet and freezing rain, especially late Friday into early Saturday.
Snow becomes more likely by Friday afternoon as temperatures hover near the freezing mark. By evening, precipitation intensifies, and a wintry mix may develop. Ice accumulations could reach up to two-tenths of an inch, enough to create slick roads and hazardous travel.
Meteorologists say travel conditions could become very difficult during the Friday evening commute. Slushy buildup and icy patches may reduce traction quickly, particularly on I-95, I-76, Route 1, and the Schuylkill Expressway. Visibility may also drop during heavier snow bursts.
Christmas Day stays relatively mild, with temperatures climbing into the 40s before colder air pushes back in. That warm-to-cold shift raises concern for refreezing later, especially on bridges and untreated surfaces.
By Saturday, freezing rain may briefly mix with rain and snow before tapering. Even lighter precipitation could keep roads slick through the morning hours. Crews will continue monitoring conditions as holiday travelers return home.
Sunday trends milder again, with rain chances increasing by afternoon. While snow melts, wet pavement may complicate travel into early Monday. Another round of rain remains possible as the final week of December begins.
Drivers should plan extra time this weekend, carry winter supplies, and stay alert. Conditions may change quickly as winter weather tightens its grip.
