Philadelphia, PA — Strong winds and sharply colder temperatures are moving into the Philadelphia area tonight as a cold front sweeps through the Mid-Atlantic, creating potentially hazardous conditions through the late evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly, much colder air is arriving behind the front, with gusty west winds possibly reaching near 60 miles per hour this evening. The strongest winds are expected during the late evening before gradually diminishing overnight.
Forecasters say wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph will be common across much of southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and northern Delaware, with isolated higher gusts possible. The combination of strong winds and rapidly falling temperatures may make it feel significantly colder than actual air temperatures.
Overnight low temperatures are expected to fall into the 20s across much of the region, while the Poconos could drop into the upper teens. Wind chill values may dip into the teens or lower at times, especially in exposed areas.
The National Weather Service warns that gusty winds could down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages, particularly in areas where soils remain soft. Drivers of high-profile vehicles are urged to use caution, especially on bridges and open roadways.
Skies are expected to be partly to mostly cloudy early, clearing toward daybreak Saturday as winds weaken. While conditions will improve overnight, temperatures will remain cold into Saturday morning.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor objects, use caution when traveling, and dress in layers if heading outside this evening. Those experiencing power outages should follow generator safety guidelines and never use generators indoors.
