Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Heavy snow is set to blanket the Philadelphia region tonight, creating dangerous travel conditions through late Sunday morning as a Winter Storm Warning takes effect.
Snow is expected to begin early this evening, quickly intensifying overnight. By daybreak Sunday, widespread accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are likely across Philadelphia, Lower Bucks, Eastern Montgomery, and Eastern Chester counties. Camden, Gloucester, and northwestern Burlington counties in New Jersey will see similar totals, leading to slick and hazardous road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, the warning is in effect from 7 p.m. this evening through 1 p.m. Sunday. Snowfall rates could be heavy at times overnight, reducing visibility and making untreated roads difficult to navigate. Bridges and overpasses are expected to ice over first, increasing the risk for spinouts and crashes.
PennDOT and NJDOT crews are expected to treat major routes including I-95, I-76, I-295, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, but drivers should still plan for delays. The Sunday morning travel window will be the most impacted, especially for anyone heading to early work shifts or religious services.
Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel overnight and Sunday morning. If travel is unavoidable, slow down, increase following distance, and keep emergency supplies in your vehicle. According to emergency management officials, power outages are not expected to be widespread, but charging devices ahead of time is advised.
Snow will taper late Sunday morning, but lingering slick spots may persist into the afternoon as temperatures hover near freezing.
