Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A high-impact winter storm will sweep into the Philadelphia metro and nearby New Jersey suburbs tonight, bringing heavy snow, slick roads, and hazardous travel through late Sunday morning. The timing targets overnight hours and the Sunday morning travel window, raising the risk for widespread delays.

Snow develops quickly after 7 p.m. this evening and intensifies overnight. The heaviest snow is expected between roughly 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., when steady snowfall will rapidly cover untreated roads. Accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected by the time snow tapers late Sunday morning. While snowfall rates may fluctuate, even brief heavier bursts will significantly reduce visibility.

According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 p.m. tonight through 1 p.m. Sunday for Philadelphia and surrounding areas. The warning includes Gloucester and Camden counties in New Jersey, along with Philadelphia, Delaware, Eastern Chester, Eastern Montgomery, and Lower Bucks counties in Pennsylvania. Cities and towns impacted include Philadelphia, Camden, Cherry Hill, Moorestown, Mount Holly, Norristown, Media, West Chester, Lansdale, Doylestown, and Morrisville.

Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly overnight. Snow-covered roads are likely on I-95, I-76, I-476, the Schuylkill Expressway, and major surface streets. According to PennDOT and NJDOT, bridges and overpasses will become slick first, and untreated secondary roads may remain snow-covered into Sunday morning. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel overnight and allow extra time if heading out early Sunday.

Pedestrians should also use caution, as sidewalks and steps may become icy. Cold temperatures will limit melting until after snow ends, allowing hazardous conditions to linger into midday Sunday.

Snow tapers late Sunday morning, with gradual improvement expected during the afternoon as crews catch up on cleanup.
