Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Clouds and rain chances are increasing across the Philadelphia region Friday, with showers expected to arrive later this afternoon and continue into early tonight.
According to the National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly, high temperatures are forecast to reach the 50s to near 60 degrees for many areas ahead of the incoming system. Cloud cover is expected to steadily increase through the day as rain approaches from the west.
Forecasters said rain showers will move from west to east across eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and northeastern Maryland during the afternoon and early evening hours. Rain chances increase into tonight before tapering off later in the evening.
No severe weather is expected with this system, and rainfall amounts are not expected to be excessive. However, periods of rain may briefly reduce visibility and create slick road conditions, particularly during the late afternoon and evening commute.
Temperature maps issued by the National Weather Service show widespread mild conditions for early January, with much of the region remaining well above freezing through the event. Overnight temperatures are expected to remain in the 40s to low 50s as clouds and showers persist into early tonight.
The National Weather Service noted that cloud cover will remain extensive even after rainfall tapers off, with additional unsettled weather possible later this weekend. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as timing and coverage of showers may change.
Commuters, students, and evening travelers should plan for wet roads and allow extra travel time during periods of rainfall, especially during peak traffic hours.
Additional updates will be issued by the National Weather Service as conditions evolve across the Mid-Atlantic region.
