Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — Rain and gusty winds will continue across the Philadelphia region Friday morning, with total rainfall amounts expected to range from 1 to 1.5 inches in the city and surrounding suburbs.
According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, steady rain overspread the region overnight and is expected to persist through much of Friday morning before tapering off later in the day. The heaviest rainfall is forecast along and south of the Interstate 95 corridor, including Philadelphia, where totals near 1.5 inches are possible.
Surrounding areas could see similar amounts. Parts of South Jersey, including Atlantic City and Toms River, are also forecast to receive 1 to 1.5 inches of rain, while areas farther north, such as Reading, Morristown, and Sussex County, are expected to receive between 0.5 and 1 inch. Portions of the Poconos could see localized totals approaching 2 inches.
In addition to heavy rain, gusty winds may accompany the system, reducing visibility during the morning commute and making travel difficult at times. Ponding of water is possible on roadways, especially in low-lying and poor-drainage areas, though widespread river flooding is not expected.
Forecasters said rain rates may be briefly heavy enough to overwhelm storm drains, leading to localized street flooding. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Friday afternoon as rain moves east and winds ease. Drier weather is expected heading into the weekend.
Commuters, delivery drivers, and school transportation routes may experience the greatest impacts during the early morning hours Friday.
