Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Snow and ice accumulation is expected across the region through tonight, potentially impacting travel on untreated roads.
According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, precipitation began as snow Friday afternoon from west to east, with areas near and north of Interstate 78 in New Jersey and Interstate 80 in eastern Pennsylvania remaining mostly snow for the duration of the event.
Forecast snowfall totals range from 6 to 12 inches in the Poconos, 6 to 8 inches in northern New Jersey, and 3 to 4 inches across parts of central New Jersey, including areas near Trenton and Flemington. The Philadelphia metro area is expected to see 1 to 2 inches of snow, while coastal and southern New Jersey locations may receive little accumulation due to a transition to rain.
The weather service reports that this evening into overnight, areas near and northwest of Interstate 95 are expected to mix with sleet and freezing rain. Farther south, including areas south of the Atlantic City Expressway, precipitation is expected to change to rain.
Ice accumulation of up to 0.10 inches is possible near Philadelphia, with up to 0.20 inches forecast in parts of Chester and Berks counties in Pennsylvania. Officials warn that even light ice accumulation could create hazardous conditions on untreated roads, sidewalks, and bridges.
The National Weather Service advises travelers to use caution during the evening commute and overnight hours, particularly in areas expected to see freezing rain.
