Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A significant winter storm is expected to impact the region late this weekend, bringing heavy snow, a period of sleet or freezing rain, and dangerous travel conditions across the city and surrounding counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly, a Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for the entire forecast area. Snow is expected to begin after midnight late Saturday night, becoming heavier through Sunday morning. The peak of the storm is forecast during the daytime Sunday into Sunday evening, when snowfall rates could approach 1 to 2 inches per hour at times.

Widespread snow and sleet totals of 6 to 16 inches are expected, with the highest amounts north of Philadelphia, where less mixing is anticipated. Forecasters warn that a transition to sleet and possibly freezing rain is likely Sunday afternoon and evening, especially south to north inland into the I-95 corridor, which could further worsen road conditions.

Snowfall amounts may be lower closer to the coast due to longer-lasting wintry mix, but impacts will remain significant. Roads, bridges, and untreated surfaces are expected to become hazardous.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel Sunday, prepare for delays into Monday morning, and monitor updates as forecast details continue to be refined.
