Philadelphia, PA – A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected to impact portions of eastern Pennsylvania and northwest New Jersey today as a winter system passes through the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Mount Holly.
Forecasters say snow and ice accumulations could reach 1 to 3 inches, with the highest totals expected across the Poconos. The Lehigh Valley and Berks County may experience a period of light freezing rain this morning before transitioning to rain later in the day.
The timing of precipitation will be key — if snow arrives before temperatures rise above freezing, roads could become slick and icy, especially along the I-78 corridor. The NWS notes that even a small delay in warming could increase the duration of freezing rain and lead to dangerous travel conditions.
Residents across Philadelphia, Trenton, and Reading should prepare for a slushy and slow morning commute, with potential for reduced visibility and patchy black ice on untreated surfaces.
Conditions are expected to improve by late afternoon as temperatures climb into the upper 30s and precipitation turns to rain across most of the region. However, snow and ice may linger longer in higher elevations of the Poconos and northwest New Jersey.
Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, allow extra braking distance, and monitor the latest forecasts for real-time updates.
