Peru, Indiana – A burst of winter weather continues across north central Indiana this afternoon, where steady snow and occasional blowing snow are creating slick and hazardous travel conditions ahead of the evening hours. Accumulations are nearing their peak, with several inches already on the ground in parts of the region.
Snow will continue through the afternoon and taper off toward early evening, with total accumulations reaching 3 to 4 inches before ending around 7 p.m. Gusty winds are contributing to areas of blowing and drifting snow, especially across open farmland and along north–south roadways. Visibility may briefly drop during heavier snow bands.
According to the National Weather Service office in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. EST for White, Cass, Miami, Grant, Blackford, and Jay counties. Communities impacted include Peru, Logansport, Monticello, Marion, Hartford City, and Portland. Road conditions are expected to remain snow-covered through the afternoon, particularly on secondary roads and untreated surfaces.
Travel along U.S. 24, U.S. 31, State Road 15, and surrounding county roads may be difficult through the evening commute. According to INDOT guidance, bridges and overpasses are especially prone to slick spots during daytime snow events with cold pavement temperatures. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations.
Even after snowfall tapers off, cold temperatures will allow snow-packed and icy areas to linger into tonight. Anyone heading out after dark should remain cautious, as refreeze could worsen conditions on less-traveled roads and parking lots.
Conditions improve gradually later tonight as crews continue treatment, but motorists should stay alert through the rest of the evening.
