SPRINGFIELD, IL – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of central Illinois this afternoon through tonight, as a strong winter system brings 2–5 inches of snow and dangerous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.

Snow is expected to overspread the region from west to east this afternoon and continue through the overnight hours, tapering off by early Friday morning. Areas north of a Rushville-to-Lawrenceville line, including Peoria, Bloomington, and Champaign, are forecast to receive the heaviest snow, while totals will gradually decrease farther south.

Forecasters warn of slippery roads and reduced visibility, particularly during the evening commute and overnight travel. Wind chills will plunge to near or below zero by Friday night, with even colder conditions expected over the weekend as arctic air settles into the region.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks.
