Peoria, Illinois – Drivers across central Illinois could lose visibility within minutes as 30 to 40 mph wind gusts whip up dust along open fields and highways through early Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, strong southerly winds are creating patchy blowing dust from Galesburg to Danville, with visibility briefly dropping to around one mile. The risk remains highest along rural stretches and major corridors like I-55, I-74, and I-72, where crosswinds can suddenly reduce sight distance.
Communities including Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Springfield, and Champaign are all in the impact zone. In agricultural areas, freshly tilled fields are especially vulnerable, sending dust across roadways with little warning. Drivers are urged to slow down, use headlights, and avoid sudden stops when visibility drops.
The threat is expected to ease later this evening as thunderstorms move into the region, bringing rain that will settle dust and improve air quality. Those storms may also introduce brief heavy downpours and gusty winds.
Conditions will continue shifting into the nighttime hours, and additional advisories could be issued as storms develop across central Illinois.
