Springfield, Ill. – Central Illinois is heading into a dangerously hot weekend, with heat indices ranging from 100 to 110 degrees through at least Monday. A heat advisory remains in effect for much of the region, as temperatures climb into the upper 90s and humidity pushes the “feels-like” temperature even higher.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a few isolated storms are possible late tonight into early Saturday, and again Monday afternoon, but widespread rain is unlikely. Cities including Peoria, Bloomington, Springfield, Decatur, and Champaign will see peak heat Saturday through Monday, with little overnight relief as lows stay in the mid-70s.
The extreme heat will make outdoor activity dangerous during the afternoon and early evening hours. Residents are urged to limit strenuous work outside, drink plenty of water, and check on elderly neighbors and pets. Cooling centers may be available in local communities.
The heat will ease slightly by Tuesday, when highs return to the lower 90s and storm chances increase to around 30%. By Wednesday, temperatures are expected to drop back into the 80s.
